First half goal rush sees Hull City youngsters suffer first pre-season defeat

Hull City’s hopes of a third successive pre-season victory were ended inside 22 minutes at Bridlington Town on Saturday, with the Tigers losing 4-2.

Andy Dawson’s young guns, heavily depleted after first team boss Grant McCann took the likes of Olly Green and Josh Hinds for the 2-0 win over Manchester United earlier in the day, found themselves 2-0 down on the East Coast, before one of four trialists involved pulled a goal back.

Having hauled themselves back into the contest, they were soon 3-1 and then 4-1 down when ex-Tiger Will Annan scored a fine goal and Billy Logan tapped in.

A raft of second half changes saw the second half become a typical pre-season encounter, though McCauley Snelgrove reduced the deficit nine minutes into the second half.

Just as they had done in their previous two pre-season outings, City found themselves a goal down away from home inside nine minutes when Tom Waudby crashed in after goalkeeper Tom Macauley couldn’t hold a fizzing drive.

At North Ferriby and Pickering, City roared back to take the lead, here they were 2-0 down after just 17 minutes when Danny Earl got his first, just moments after seeing a well driven effort crash back off the post.

Just as it looked like the hosts might run through the Tigers, City pulled a goal back when Trialist A turned well from a corner inside the box and crashed through a crowd of bodies and beyond Tom Hitchcock in the Town goal.

That strike came just 19 minutes into an absorbing start at Queensgate and the goal rush wasn’t done there.

Former Tiger Will Annan made it 3-1 just two minutes later when he volleyed smartly into the net and three soon became four when Billy Logan poked it at the near post, a goal reminiscent of Josh Magennis at Sunderland the night before.

City lost Alfie Taylor just before the interval after being on the wrong end of a crunching tackle which left him nursing a bag of ice on his boot, and hobbling off on crutches.

Hopes of a comeback were rekindled early in the second period when Snelgrove reacted quickest to an effort Hitchcock couldn’t hold.

Boss Andy Dawson opted to make a quadruple change just after the hour mark with goalkeeper Macauley, Harry Wallis, Keegan Green and Sam Deacon all coming off, with Harry Fisk, Kyle Fanning, Trialist D and Will Jarvis getting a run-out.

Annan was continuing to cause problems for City and almost notched a second against his old club, but was thwarted well by Fisk at his near post.

Substitute Jarvis almost fashioned a third for City after enterprising work in midfield, he surged forward before playing a delightful reverse pass into the path of Snelgrove, his shot well blocked by Hitchcock.

And with that chance, so did the Tigers’ hopes of hauling themselves back into the contest.

City: Macauley, Nixon (c), Curtis, Taylor, Trialist A, Trialist B, Green, Wallis, Snelgrove, Beckett, Deacon. Subs: Fisk, Fanning, Trialist C, Trialist D, Jarvis.

Bridlington Town: Hitchcock, Monkman, Lewis, Davidson, Barkworth, Hotte, Waudby, Parker, Logan, Earn, Annan. Subs: Norfolk, Connelly, Herbison.
