Hull City were boosted by the return to fitness of Callum Elder for Saturday’s home clash with QPR, as the Australian left-back was handed a first start of the season.
Elder has missed all City’s public outings in pre-season and the opening two games of the campaign replacing Josh Emmanuel who drops to the bench, while Ryan Longman has recovered from illness to make his debut for the Tigers replacing the injured Mallik Wilks.
Those were the two changes made by boss Grant McCann following last weekend’s stunning 4-1 win at Preston North End.
Keane Lewis-Potter and Josh Magennis were part of the front three along with Longman, while Greg Docherty, George Moncur and Richie Smallwood all retained their places in the middle of the park, with Elder the only change at the back from Deepdale.
McCann was also able to name summer signing Randell Williams on the bench after he, like Longman, recovered from illness to feature, alongside what looks a strong bench.
Nathan Baxter, Tom Eaves, Josh Emmanuel, Andy Cannon, Matt Smith and Di’Shon Bernard were there alongside Williams.
For QPR, there was a return for defender Jordy de Wijs, named as part of the Rs back four alongside in-form Rob Dickie and Yohan Barbet, though there was no Charlie Austin for Mark Warburton’s side.
“Every game is a challenge,” the Northern Irishman said ahead of the game.
“We got our performance right last week against Preston, which helped us get the win.
“This game is going to be no different, in that we’re going to have to be really good. In fact, we’re going to have to be better than we were last week.
“QPR are a good team. We’ve done a lot of work on them this week and their system is similar to Preston but they have a different way of playing it.
“There’s going to be challenges in the game and we’ll have to be right technically and be good defensively. When we go forward, we’ll have to be good on transitions.
“There’s a lot of aspects we need to be good at to try and win this game. Hopefully, we can do that.”
