Nearly 350 new cases of coronavirus have been recorded in Somerset over the last day

Somerset has recorded nearly 350 new cases of coronavirus in the last 24 hours.

According to official figures, a total of 348 new Covid cases were found in Somerset today (August 4) – over 50% more than the 229 cases reported yesterday.

The highest number of cases were found in Bath and North East Somerset, where some 80 cases were found.

North Somerset also had a high number of cases, after 75 positive tests were returned across the county.

Somerset West and Taunton recorded 58 cases, South Somerset found 50, while Mendip and Sedgemoor found 44 and 41 new cases respectively.

It brings the total number of cases in the county to 55,490 since the start of the pandemic.

Breakdown of positive test results

The number of positive test results in each area since the pandemic began is recorded below, with new positive test results in brackets.

  • Bath and North East Somerset: 13,173(+80)
  • Mendip: 5,072 (+44)
  • North Somerset: 14,849 (+75)
  • Sedgemoor: 7,029 (+41)
  • Somerset West and Taunton: 7,683 (+58)
  • South Somerset: 7,684 (+50)

Covid death breakdown for each Somerset area

The number of deaths within 28 days of a positive test result in each area since the pandemic began is recorded below, with new deaths in brackets.

  • Bath and North East Somerset: 225 (-)
  • Mendip: 162 (-)
  • North Somerset – 319 (-)
  • Sedgemoor: 168 (-)
  • Somerset West and Taunton: 197 (-)
  • South Somerset: 162 (-)

UK figures

The Government said a further 119 people had died within 28 days of testing positive for Covid-19 as of Wednesday, bringing the UK total to 130,000.

Separate figures published by the Office for National Statistics show there have now been 155,000 deaths registered in the UK where Covid-19 was mentioned on the death certificate.

As of 9am on Wednesday, there had been a further 29,312 lab-confirmed Covid-19 cases in the UK, the Government said.

Government data up to August 3 shows that of the 85,661,367 Covid jabs given in the UK, 46,928,033 46,898,525 were first doses, a rise of 29,508 on the previous day.

Some 38,733,334 were second doses, an increase of 143,002.
