Hull City’s fitness concerns laid bare as Tigers prepare to face Preston

Hull City have a number of major fitness worries as they prepare for the new Championship season which gets underway at Preston North End on Saturday.

The Tigers have played their recent pre-season games without star men George Honeyman, Mallik Wilks and George Honeyman, with the latter requiring surgery on an ankle injury, while two players have been suffering from coronavirus.

Honeyman was dogged in the closing stages of last season with a problem which saw him regularly play through the pain barrier to play a starring role in the club’s title win.

City’s midfield maestro is certainly missing the opening weeks of the campaign, but the prognosis on Elder and Wilks is a little more upbeat.

McCann expects Wilks to be fit and ready for Deepdale, despite the 22-goal striker not playing a single minute of action in pre-season, and Australian defender Elder will be monitored over the course of the next few days.

There also remains doubt surrounding the availability of Sean McLoughlin who missed last weekend’s games having felt unwell, while Randell Williams and Thomas Mayer continue to recover from coronavirus.

Here’s a round-up of the latest injury news from Grant McCann…

Mallik Wilks

“Mallik we didn’t want to risk but he’s fine. He’ll train all week, he trained again today we just didn’t risk him.”

George Honeyman

“It’s a big blow. It was a bit of a freak thing that happened up in Scotland. He went over on his ankle with no one near him and we knew it was a bit unstable anyway.

“For us to get it early in pre-season and get the operation done – I think he’s about three or four weeks into it now – hopefully George doesn’t miss too many games and he’s good to go for the rest of the season.

“If we can get him back before the international break that would be a big plus, realistically it’s going to be after the international break so he’s going to miss the first six or seven games.”

Callum Elder

“Callum, we’re hoping at a push we could get him (ready) for the first game, if not he’s not going to be far away and he’ll be available for the second.

“We’ve got to take it day by day next week with Callum, see how he is and see how he’s progressing with the treatment and on-field fitness work.”

Randell Williams and Thomas Mayer

“Randell and Tommy have contracted the virus, so its disappointing news and we hope they get better soon.

“Sean is on the borderline a little bit, he’s not feeling too well. He’s had a PCR test so we’re waiting to hear the results of that.”
